Onlangs is bij boekhandel Obelisk een mooi van hardcover herziene en geactualiseerde uitgave verschenen van het boek van Marcel Messing met de titel “Van levensboom tot kruis”. Het meest centrale archetype in het menselijke bewustzijn is de levensboom. In talloze mythen, verhalen en legenden en in alle grote religies komt het symbool van de levensboom voor. Talloos zijn ook de mythen over de val van de mens in relatie tot de levensboom. Het meest bekend in de christelijke wereld is het verhaal uit Genesis 2 en 3, waarin sprake is van ‘de boom des levens’, symbool van de goddelijke eenheid, en ‘de boom van kennis van goed en kwaad’, symbool van dualiteit. Op verrassende wijze worden de zondeval en het probleem van goed en kwaad toegelicht vanuit gnostische teksten, esoterie, theologie, psychologie en antropologie. Het drama van de menselijke val is nog steeds actueel. Onwetendheid en begeerte houden nog altijd het rad van geboorte, ziekte, lijden, ouderdom en dood in stand. De weg naar bevrijding uit deze kringloop is gelegen in ‘de kruisiging’ van de zintuigen. Zo wordt het kruis symbool van het sterven van het ego en de eenwording van de menselijke geest met de geest van het universum, het eeuwige licht.
