Met Boeddha onder de vijgenboom tracht vanuit de oude bronnen inzicht te geven in de leer van de Boeddha, hoe deze zich vanuit India naar het Westen verspreidde en op welke wijze christendom en moderne gnosis hiermee tot de dag van vandaag omgingen. Het officiële christendom ging in het algemeen de weg van ontkenning, verdringing en vooral christianisering van hetgeen als boeddhistisch werd gezien. De moderne gnosis (theosofie, antroposofie en sommige Rozenkruisersscholen) beroept zich op een geheel eigen occult systeem, een soort esoterisch boeddhisme, waarbij meestal de Mahatma’s (Meesters of ‘oudere broeders’) een belangrijke rol spelen, en lijfde de Boeddha in haar occult systeem in. Daardoor ontstond er ‘een soort potpourri van grof boeddhisme’. Dat aan dit alles een dieper conflict Oost-West ten grondslag ligt, toont de auteur aan de hand van talloze bronnen op soms onthullende wijze aan. Vragen over leven en dood, ziel en eeuwigheid, worden niet uit de weg gegaan.
