‘Dit zijn de geheime woorden die Jezus de Levende gesproken heeft en die Dydimus Thomas heeft opgeschreven.’ Zo luidt de beginregel van het Evangelie van Thomas, dat in 1945 met 51 andere handschriften gevonden werd in een kruik nabij het Egyptische plaatsje Nag Hammadi. Deze vondst wordt beschouwd als de belangrijkste gnostische handschriftenvondst van onze eeuw.
